Councilwoman Jamie Torres, District 3
“As the Councilwoman representing District 3, I’m honored to be part of the Southwest Food Coalition and deeply grateful for the transformative work they do. Founded in response to the pandemic and the increased need for food access and organizational support, the Coalition has become a powerful force in uniting food partners and advocates. Through strengthened collaboration, improved infrastructure, and advocating for food justice, the Coalition is making a profound impact. This vital work not only supports our most vulnerable residents but also builds more resilient communities by ensuring equitable access to food and fostering better health for all.”
Food, Community, Action.
-
Centering Community
Community drives our work. Our priorities have always been community engagement and shared power.
-
Learning and Support
Our Coalition Members asked for opportunities to learn, grow and support each other.
-
Southwest Food Hub
We’re addressing barriers by providing transportation and storage for bulk food to our Southwest Food Coalition partners.
-
Advocacy
We’re coordinating advocacy efforts to get the funding Denver needs to provide nourishing food and resources to our community.
-
Food Access in Schools
Our community identified the need for more fresh and culturally relevant food for kids 0-5. We deliver food weekly to our school partners to support our youngest neighbors.
-
SNAP and Nutrition Education
Our team is helping our community learn about food assistance programs and the importance of nutrition and cooking education.
Marissa Cantrell, Supply Manager, Angelica Village Food Pantry
“We have benefited from our partnership with [the] SW Food Coalition in many ways. We were first able to use their warehouse for our Food Bank of the Rockies order, saving us time, gas and money to supply our food pantry. Next, we were able to receive a large industrial refrigerator to hold our fresh food at correct temperature for our weekly food distribution. And finally, but definitely not least, SWFC partnered with us and Common Harvest to secure a grant to supply our food pantry with fresh CO produce for 6 months. We were also able to purchase a greenhouse and expand our chicken coop with that grant. And we have been able to increase the amount of individuals served from 85-110 thanks to this grant partnership.
Angelica Village is very thankful and super proud of our friendship with the coalition and we hope to continue to strengthen, build and expand our partnership and services offered ”
